Free Practice Question of the Week [14]

Which of the following antibiotics can be safely used in the first trimester of pregnancy?

a) Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim

b) Cefuroxime

c) Doxycycline

d) Trimethoprim

Scroll down for the answer!

The answer is (B). Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin which is considered safe in the first trimester of pregnancy.

(A) and (D) are incorrect because they both contain trimethoprim, which is a folate antagonist. Such as medication can reduce folic acid and cause neural tube defects.

(C) is incorrect because doxycycline can lead to abnormal teeth and bone development (possibly related to calcium chelation).
