PEBC: What You Need to Know: Pediculicides

Examples:

-permethrin (Nix)

-pyrethrins/piperonyl butoxide (R & C)

-dimethicone (Nyda)

-isopropyl myristate (Resultz)

Dosing and Administration:

-use on Day 1 with combing and repeat second dose

-permethrin - hair should be washed with conditioner-free shampoo and towel dried before application, leave in for 10 minutes and rinse, repeat after 7 days

-pyrethrin - apply to dry hair and leave in for 10 minutes, rinse, repeat after 7 to 10 days

-dimethicone - apply to dry hair, comb after 30 minutes, leave in overnight and rinse out in the morning, repeat after 8 to 10 days

-isopropyl myristate - apply to dry hair and leave in for 10 minutes, the comb and wash out, repeat after 7 days

Adverse Effects:

-avoid permethrin/pyrethrin use in ragweed or chrysanthemum allergy

-itching, burning common with permethrin/pyrethrins - can be treated with oral antihistamines or topical corticosteroids

-careful not to expose/irritate other areas of body
