PEBC: What You Need to Know: Thiazolidinediones (TZD)

Examples: Pioglitazone, Rosiglitazone

Indication: Diabetes

Mechanism: increases insulin sensitivity

Dosing: Once to twice daily

Role in Therapy:

Very rarely used nowadays - due to emerging evidence of safey concerns (see adverse effects)

Adverse Effects:

-edema

-weight gain

-may preciptiate out heart failure

-increased fracture risk

-bladder cancer (? pioglitazone)
